- JRE Installation Details
- You will launch the Informer installer application on the Web Server. The installer is a Java application and requires a Java 1.6 compliant runtime in order to operate (note: the JDK is not necessary). Visit the Sun public downloads site to download a Java 1.6 JRE if you do not have one installed on the host computer.
- Some operating systems may require another Java vendor. For an AIX operating system, you need to acquire the Java runtime from IBM, for example. If your operating system is not listed, contact the vendor for your operating system for guidance.
Before Installation
Installing the Java Runtime Environment
The installer is a Java application and requires a Java 1.6 compliant runtime in order to operate (note: the JDK is not necessary). See http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads to download a Java 1.6 JRE if you do not have one installed on the host computer.
Identifying the Web Server
Choose an Informer web server. While Informer will happily run on any machine, including your database server, most customers choose to install to a separate server that is ideally configured for hosting web traffic. We recommend that you allocate at least 1GB of memory to the Informer server application.
Opening the Informer Port
You will be asked what http port to use. The default is 80. If you are installing on a server that already hosts a web application (such as a previous version of Informer), you may need to select a different port. Common ports to use are 80 (the default), 8080, and 9090. If you have a firewall setup on the web server you will have to add an exception for the Informer port, so that users may access Informer from other machines.
Using a Context Name
You will be asked for a context name. This will be the part of the informer web address after the server name. The default is 'informer'.
